What information we collect and why
Business listings
The directory publishes details of funeral directors, funeral florists, stonemasons and probate solicitors: the business name, address, type of business, services, ownership where known, published prices where available, website, phone number and email address. We compile these from public sources, including the businesses’ own websites, trade body member lists and public business listings, and from details that businesses send us.
Most of this is information about businesses, not people. Where a listing relates to a sole trader or a partnership, or includes a named person’s work email address, it can be personal information. We publish it because we have a legitimate interest in running a useful public directory of businesses, using contact details those businesses have already made public for customers to use.
If you are a listed business and want a listing corrected or removed, contact us and we will act on it promptly.
When you contact us
If you use the contact form or email us, we collect your name, your email address and whatever you tell us in your message. We use this only to deal with your enquiry. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in responding to people who contact us.
When you submit or update a listing
If you send us a listing, we collect the business details for publication, together with your name, your role and your email address. Your own name, role and email address are not published. We use them to confirm the listing with you, to tell you when it is live and to contact you about it later. Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in keeping the directory accurate and, where you buy a featured listing, the performance of our contract with you.
How the site is used
We count how often each listing is viewed and how often its website, phone, email and map links are clicked. These counts are stored as daily totals only. They do not use cookies and are not linked to you, your device or your IP address.
Like most websites, our hosting provider keeps server logs that include IP addresses, browser type and the pages requested. These are used to keep the site secure and working, and are deleted on the hosting provider’s normal schedule.
To protect our forms from abuse we briefly store a scrambled (hashed) version of the sender’s IP address for up to one hour.
Cookies and analytics
We use an essential cookie to remember your cookie choice. With your consent we may also use analytics cookies, such as Google Analytics, to understand how the site is used, and advertising cookies to measure advertising. These are only set if you accept them. See our cookie policy for details and to change your choice.
Who we share information with
We do not sell personal information. We share it only with the service providers that help us run the site, who act on our instructions:
- our website hosting and email providers;
- Google, if you accept analytics or advertising cookies.
We may also disclose information if the law requires us to.
Transfers outside the UK
Some providers, such as Google, may process information outside the UK. Where that happens we rely on safeguards recognised under UK data protection law, such as adequacy regulations or approved contractual clauses.
How long we keep information
- Enquiries: up to two years after our last contact with you.
- Listing submissions: the published business details for as long as the listing is live. The submitter’s name and email address for as long as the listing is live and up to two years afterwards.
- Usage counts: these are not personal information and may be kept indefinitely.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
- ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you;
- ask us to correct information that is wrong;
- ask us to delete your information or to stop using it;
- object to our use of your information where we rely on legitimate interests;
- withdraw consent to cookies at any time.
To use any of these rights, contact us using the details above. We will reply within one month.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk or on 0303 123 1113. We would appreciate the chance to put things right first.
