Who you need
Stonemasons and memorial masons
Memorial masons design, carve and fix headstones and other memorials, add inscriptions to existing family headstones, and clean and restore older memorials. Most will apply for the cemetery or churchyard permit on your behalf.
A headstone is usually fixed six to twelve months after a burial, once the ground has settled. Look for a mason who belongs to the National Association of Memorial Masons or is accredited by the British Register of Accredited Memorial Masons, and get two or three written quotations. The guide to choosing a headstone or memorial explains the rules and choices.

Frequently asked questions
When should I contact a memorial mason?
You can contact a memorial mason at any time, but most headstones are fixed six to twelve months after a burial, once the ground has settled. Many families start talking to masons a few months after the funeral, so there is time to agree the design and wording and get the permit.
Do memorial masons handle the cemetery permit?
Usually, yes. The mason prepares the application for the cemetery or churchyard, and the grave owner signs it. There is normally a permit fee, which the mason may include in the quotation. Churchyard designs must also be approved by the vicar under the diocese's regulations.
